About

This is one of Ana Hatherly's major publications, bringing together a selection of works developed over 10 years. It has the exceptional particularity of being a signed limited edition, as well as being dedicated to two great Portuguese artists - Helena Almeida and Artur Rosa.

In Mapas da Imaginação e da Memória (Maps of Imagination and Memory), Hatherly recounts her venture into the construction of a "new script", which she calls the "structural alphabet", and which results from the organisation of eight basic characters that are connected using mathematical logic, creating a system of meaning similar to ideograms. These characters have a material dimension but are not hierarchical and have no meaning. Their combination makes it possible to form open, closed or mixed structures, and when they are assigned semantic values, they constitute a coherent vocabulary capable of conceptual expression, despite their "utopian character".

The artist also points out that although this "alphabet without a key" has no phonetic expression, it can be spoken, as it constitutes a specific language given its metaphorical value, although it does not guarantee a language.

Ana Hatherly (1929–2015)

Ana Hatherly was a prominent Portuguese artist, poet, and writer known for her innovative contributions to experimental poetry and visual arts. A key figure in the Portuguese experimental poetry movement of the 1960s, she integrated text and image in her works, creating a unique interplay between literature and visual art. Hatherly's oeuvre includes poetry, prose, essays, and artist books, characterized by their avant-garde style and exploration of language's materiality. She was also an influential academic, teaching at the New University of Lisbon and contributing to the development of Portuguese contemporary art and literature. Her legacy is celebrated for its bold experimentation and significant impact on Portuguese cultural and intellectual life .
