Pedro Proença is a versatile Portuguese artist known for his work in painting, illustration, writing, and composing. He began drawing at the age of 13 and initially pursued comics. He studied briefly at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where he met influential painter João Vieira. Proença then graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Lisbon University in 1986.
During his student years, he co-founded the Homeostético group with fellow artists Manuel João Vieira, Pedro Portugal, Ivo, and Xana. This group was known for its eclectic and culturally subversive works. Proença's art is characterized by its allegorical and imaginative settings, often blending elements from Western art history, Greek literature, and various other cultural references.
Proença's first solo exhibitions were held in 1984, and since then, he has showcased his work in prestigious venues such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Galería Fúcares in Madrid, and Kunstverein in Frankfurt. His accolades include the Nadir Afonso Prize, an Honourable Mention at the Festival Cagnes-sur-Mer, the 5th Triennial of India Acquisition Prize, the União Latina Prize, the Eixo Atlântico Prize, and the 1st Salon de Otoño de Plasencia Prize.
