About
The Kestner Gesellschaft is one of the largest art associations (German: Kunstvereine) in Germany. The Kestner Gesellschaft has had an eventful history spanning more than 100 years, three locations, and one forced closure. The only thing that has never changed is its aim: to always show relevant, international art of its time, from Paul Klee to Guerrilla Girls.
The halls of the Goseriedebad, which once housed an indoor swimming pool, regularly host extensive group and solo exhibitions. With over 700 exhibitions to date, it helped shaping the art scene in Germany and abroad and its continually breaking new ground.
Auguste Herbin (1882-1960)
Auguste Herbin was a French painter and influential figure in the development of abstract art in the early 20th century. He was a contemporary of and studiomate to the famed founders of Cubism: Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Juan Gris. His career spanned over several artistic movements, from Fauvism and Cubism to Geometric Abstraction.
Herbin's style evolved towards geometric abstraction, characterized by flat, colorful compositions of triangles, circles, and rectangles. At over 60 years old, he invented a “alphabet plastique” that gave birth to a specific language, creating its signs, vocabulary and syntax.
Between the 1930s and 1940s, Herbin participated in several important artist groups and publications associated with non-figurative abstraction, including the Abstraction-Création group, the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, and the journal nonfigurativ. His “bold anticipations” had a decisive influence over many artists, such as Vasarely and Jo Delahaut, who largely banished curves from his artistic research, associating them with the organic world.
Condition: Good overall condition (Integrity and authenticity).
Provenance: Kestner Gesellschaft Hannover. Acquired at auction. Ownership: Monginho Collection
